WHAT’S A METAL SIP
Metal SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels) are a building material comprised of a steel frame with foam insulation (Extra Polystyrene) bonded together, resulting in some of the highest strength to weight ratios of any structural insulated panel in the construction industry.
SIPS - STRUCTURAL INSULATED PANELS
SIPs (generically) come in a number of different materials - concrete, wood, metal, fiberglass and more. SIPs are structural in that they provide the structural support of the home frame and roof. They are a panel(s) or wall section(s) that have an insulated core. SIPs inherently offer higher energy efficiency and durability versus traditional timber framing. Unlike Wood SIPs, Metal SIPs do not combust, rot, mold, delipidate or require maintenance. Concrete SIPs, while durable and energy-efficient take a long time to cure, can not be moved once set in place and are prone to cracking and mold if not properly ventilated or set to the foundation appropriately.
In 1937, Eleanor Roosevelt dedicated a small house clad with stressed-skin panels in Madison, Wis., that was part of the U.S. Forest Service’s attempt to conserve forest resources. It remained standing until 1998. These stressed-skin panels were a precursor to what is known today as structural insulated panels (SIPs).
Metal and Steel SIPs have been around for 50 years - mostly in commercial applications. This process has been repeated in tens of thousands of projects all around the world. This means the bugs have been worked out of the process and it’s rare for something new to come up that has never been encountered before.
